Daisosho SEN Genshitsu Receives Prime Minister’s Award

On April 20, 2023, the day following his one-hundredth birthday, Daisosho SEN Genshitsu attended an award ceremony at the Prime Minister’s Office (Nagata-cho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), to receive the Prime Minister’s award, presented to Dr. Sen “… in recognition of his achievements, which have contributed to the promotion of the key Japanese policy of peace diplomacy.” (MOFA) At the ceremony, Prime Minister KISHIDA Fumio presented Daisosho with the Certificate of Award and a shield.

Mrs. SEN Masako, wife of Iemoto Zabosai, accompanied Daisosho to the ceremony, and together with Minister of Foreign Affairs HAYASHI Yoshimasa and others, witnessed the ceremony.

The Prime Minister expressed his gratitude to Daisosho for Daisosho’s many years of diplomatic efforts to promote Japanese culture, and in response, Daisosho said, “I am deeply honored. I will continue to devote myself to it and put effort into it for a while longer.” More photos can be seen here.

Daisosho became the 35th individual to have ever received the Prime Minister’s Award since it was established in 1966.

Following the ceremony, Daisosho responded to questions by members of the press who were there to cover the event.
