The Farewell Assembly for Hōunsai Sōshō

The farewell assembly (owakare-no-kai) for Hōunsai Sōshō took place at the Kyoto International Conference Center (ICC Kyoto) Event Hall, in the Sakyō ward of Kyoto city, on Thursday November 27, 2025, and altogether approximately 4,200 people took part in it over the morning and afternoon sessions.

The altar was graced with flowers sent from the Hitachi-no-miya family, Mikasa-no-miya family, and Takamatsu-no-miya family. Approximately 1,600 attendees gathered for the opening ceremony at 10:00 AM. They included Her Imperial Highness Princess Akiko of Mikasa, Omotesenke Iemoto SEN Sōsa, Omotesenke Former Iemoto SEN Sōtan, Mushakōjisenke Iemoto SEN Sōshu, Konnichian elders and other executives and elected officials of Urasenke-related corporations, as well as representatives from various fields and groups associated with Hōunsai Sōshō during his lifetime. After everyone observed a moment of silent prayer, Iemoto SEN Sōshitsu gave an address as chief mourner, and placed a flower offering at the altar where a portrait of Hōunsai Sōshō was displayed.

At the afternoon session, there were approximately 2,600 attendees, centering on Urasenke chadō followers from all regions of Japan.

In the adjacent New Hall, photo panels introducing the various periods of Hōunsai Sōshō′s lifetime were displayed.
