About Daisōshō’s Title and Name

News & Announcements

The honorific title “Daisōshō” used by Urasenke is applied to a family head who is alive. My grandfather, Tantansai Sōshō, was referred to by that title (pronounced either “daisōshō” or “ōsōshō”) until he died. In keeping with how we refer to all the past family heads, my father will generally be referred to from now on as Hōunsai Sōshō (“Sōshō” is the basic honorific title), and he will officially be known as Hōunsai Hansō Sōshitsu (鵬雲斎汎叟宗室).

Note that the name “Genshitsu” that my father adopted is a name used while young or as a retirement name. The names by which he will officially be known from now on represent the names which he formally used during his era as the Urasenke family head.
