Grand Master SEN Soshitsu XV in Norway

Having just ended his intensive lecture program at the University of Hawaii on February 12, 2002, Grand Master SEN Soshitsu XV had no time to rest before boarding his flight from Kansai International Airport destined for Oslo, Norway. During his stay in Oslo from February 17-21, 2002, he energetically introduced the spirit and ideals of the Way of Tea to the people there. It was his second time to ever visit Norway, the first time having been in 1972, exactly thirty years ago. The visit this time was by invitation of Ambassador KAWAI Masao of the Japanese Embassy in Norway.
Arriving in Oslo in the evening of the 17th, the following day he was interviewed by the national broadcasting company and Aftenposten newspaper.

Also that day, February 18, he gave a talk and chanoyu demonstration at the residence of the Japanese ambassador, before an audience of one hundred invited guests, including representatives of the Norwegian government and royal palace. In his talk, he carefully explained about the key concepts of the Way of Tea. For the demonstration, he personally played the part of host. In contrast to the extreme cold outdoors, the room was pervaded by a warm atmosphere as the attendees enjoyed sampling the sweet and bowl of tea served to each one of them afterwards.
On February 19, the venue was the Oslo Museum of Decorative Arts and Design, for a public talk and demonstration. The large turnout surpassed the auditorium capacity, giving witness to the wide interest in the Way of Tea held by the citizens of Norway.
The programs on both days received an enthusiastic response, paving the way for the future establishment of an Urasenke association in Norway.
