2004 marks the 50th year since Daisosho SEN Genshitsu (at the time, wakasosho), together with his brother NAYA Sotan Yoshiharu, went to Mexico in 1954 to attend the 9th World Convention of the International Junior Chamber as representative from Japan, and during that trip, inaugurated the Urasenke Mexico, Brazil, Peru, and Argentina chapters.

To commemorate this 50th anniversary of Urasenke's official presence in Central and South America, there will be a grand Urasenke Tankokai Latin America Convention held in Mexico City this coming September. Many events are scheduled, including a tea offertory service as well as a public lecture by Daisosho SEN Genshitsu, and a tea gathering at which the various venues will highlight the features of the sponsoring countries.
