| The 32nd Urasenke Hawaii Seminar took place from July 18 to 25, 2004, with eighty-five registrants participating. It began with an inaugural meeting and luncheon on July 18, after which the registrants checked in to their group lodging, The Breakers Hotel next door to the Urasenke Hawaii Branch quarters, near Waikiki Beach. From 9:00 A.M. on Monday, July 19, there was a welcome chakai and luncheon sponsored by the Chado Urasenke Tankokai Hawaii Association at the Japanese Culture Center, where there is the tearoom named Seikoan that Urasenke donated. |

| The next two days represented the core of the seminar, during which most of the events took place at the University of Hawaii (UH) Manoa Campus and celebrated the 35th anniversary this year of the UH Chado Club supervised by Urasenke. From 9:00 A.M. on July 20 in Architecture Auditorium, there was a brief opening ceremony and then a lecture by Dr. SEN Genshitsu. This was followed by a demonstration of ryurei-style chanoyu, which employs tables and stools, on the stage. Dr. Fujio MATSUDA (Honorary President, Chado Urasenke Tankokai Hawaii Association; Former UH President) played the role of host, and Dr. Satoru IZUTSU (Professor, Department of Medicine, UH; Vice President, Chado Urasenke Tankokai Hawaii Association) acted as assistant, while commentary was provided by Konnichian Deputy Tea Master (gyotei) KURAKAZU Sokaku. After a brief intermission, a video film entitled "Mahalo Nui Loa Dr. Sen," introducing the history of the close relationship
between Dr. Sen and the UH, was shown. In the afternoon, members of the UH Chado Club hosted a friendship exchange chakai for the seminar participants, at the Jakuan tea house that Urasenke donated to the East-West Center, which is on the UH Manoa campus. Besides an usucha venue in the Jakuan, there was an outdoor ryurei venue. The evening of July 20, a special reception was held at the official residence of the Japanese Consul-General in Honolulu, commemorating the UH Chado Club's 35th anniversary. |

| Back at Architecture Auditorium on July 21, there were two lectures in the morning: one by Professor Robert HUEY, on the theme "Japanese Poetry and Tea," and the other by East-West Center Director Charles MORRISON, on the matter of "Official Foreign Exchange and Peace." This ended the educational program, and a ceremony was held where the registrants each were handed a certificate of seminar completion from Dr. Sen. In the evening, Dr. Sen hosted a banquet at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel, to which the seminar registrants as well as the Chado Urasenke Tankokai Hawaii Association members were invited. |

| The optional programs offered on July 22-25 included Hawaiian pottery and crafts workshops, Hula dance lessons, and tours to the islands of Maui and Hawaii, where the local Chado Urasenke Tankokai members hosted a chakai and luncheon for the participants. The closing event was a Sayonara Party held at the Prince Hotel the evening of July 25. The ten students who learn chado at their regular schools in Japan as a part of Urasenke's Gakko Chado (Chado Education in the School System) program and were invited to attend the seminar contributed to the entertainment with a gymnastics act they had gotten together. Most of the participants from Japan were on their group flights back to Japan the following day, having spent a week enjoying the people, culture, atmosphere, and weather of Hawaii and the UH together with Dr. Sen. |
